LESSON ONE

Best creative work

The image above shows my creative work of two origami models of a modular star and a 'gyroscope'. Modular origami has always captured my attention into thinking about the possibilities of constructing moderately difficult models such as above when I was in my primary school years. Although constructing them required at least 6 units or more, a lot of patience was required upon the completion of the models. However, this has not stopped me in building such models as I was interested in seeing the finished product, and also a representation of the amount of perseverance gone into folding and joining the units together to create a masterpiece (through my experience). Therefore, origami has sparked my attention to appreciate the process and its final product, let alone appreciate the beauty of modular origami.

Great piece of architecture

The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is one of the many buildings that has caught my attention through its contrasts, and its engineering masterpieces of the 21st century. Designed by the Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, the shape of the exterior walls of the Guggenheim has been noted to consist of many materials such as titanium to change colours as you move along the building. The random nature and the wall's curvature include this optical property of the building. The Guggenheim has inspired my attention to the possibility in the construction of a strangely designed building, one that would consider the process of reproducing sharp curves, such as the Guggenheim, from a computer and then building it in a grand scale - an almost impossible task back in 1997 when the building was completed.

A photograph of something beautiful

This was one of the many photographs that I have chosen in terms of its beauty it conveys. The photograph above shows a Sakura (cherry blossom) blooming in mid-August in the Japanese garden located in Auburn Botanical Gardens. Cherry blossom trees are adorned in symbolism of youth, the beginnings and the preciousness of life. The pink colour of the petals of the cherry blossom flowers basking in the afternoon rays of sunlight give off a sense of tranquility and a feeling of rarity - one may not be able to experience the conditions that existed within the photograph. In my opinion, the tree is beautiful physically and emotionally as it allows me to reflect my own past and the challenges of life, and therefore allowing me to appreciate a sense of beauty it is trying to convey to me as a viewer.
